I met my parents here before flying out for a six-month contract abroad. This was the most disappointing "last American meal" I could have experienced. Not only was the service horrible and the food and drinks way overpriced, but we all got food poisoning as well! It hit me halfway through my first flight, the majority of which I spend in the gross airplane bathroom. Two of us contacted the restaurant's management, and they basically said we were lying. No apologies, nothing. Stay far, far away from this place.

On my last layover in the Minneapolis St. Paul airport, I had a bit of time. As I had never had a "hot dish", I thought it necessary to finally try one. I didn't eat in the restaurant so can't truly speak to the service (except for the lacking-in-all-personality guy who took my to go order.) I had a side salad and what I assume to be a traditional hot dish. Hmmph. Kinda weird. I guess it's hard to say definitively how it was considering my lack of previous hot dish consumption. We Southerners eat some weird stuff, but the rice with beef and tater tots confused the heck out of me. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't anything to get excited about either. They did do a nice job on the salad, though-- lots of fresh mixed greens, plump tomatoes, cucumber, etc. Glad a have plenty of other options in the MSP airport for my next visit.

In this world there are men that make lame attempts at being Real Men. Then, there are confirmed 100% Real Men. Finally, there are confirmed 100% Real Men that eat at Hot Dish. That is right my reader - there are only 3 kinds of men and I am now proud to say I fall into the 100% Real Man that has eaten at Hot Dish category. During a recent trip to Minneapolis I landed early in the morning in search of something other than traditional airport fare. And I found all that and more at Hot Dish. It was not even 8:30 in the morning but they were playing a mix of punk, classic rock and CCR. Playing CCR in the early morning hours is going to get you an extra star no matter what you are serving me and that could include a turd on a stick. The man behind the bar was pouring draft beer to some of the diners and maintaining a level of banter amongst all that was inspiring. I am a serious professional that was on business so I stuck with the coffee and steel-cut oatmeal. After I finished I felt like I was cut from steel too and ready to brave the frigid April temps of the great Minnesota wilderness. Hot Dish is a place I will frequent next time I have a hunger in my stomach and happen to be in the MSP airport. And I tend to have a hunger in my stomach often because I am a confirmed 100% Real Man. And if you don't believe me I will produce my Hot Dish receipt. Because I flaunt that as a Badge of Honor.

Given its one of a few options on the non-security cleared area of MSP probably keeps this place open. Two stars only because the fried pickles were pretty good. But the service was slow even with less than 25% of the restaurant full. Plenty of staff, they were just too busy chatting on the back. The flat bread pizza was awful - paltry toppings and stale crust. If you can wait to eat until the other side of security I would wait.

Eh.... Food was alright, pieces of toast were TINY with their breakfast dishes. Nice server, though!

I'm from California. I've never had hot dish, I've only heard of it. Since I don't know any Minnesotan church moms I realized this was the only way I would be able to try it. It was good. Casserole rice with meat and veggies, topped with tater tots and cheese. Came out hot and presented neat. They had one very pregnant waitress working and she was doing her best. I've certainly had worse service at a place with more staff. As for hot dish, I'd want to make it at home now. If you're not going inside the airport (this place is pre-security), it certainly ain't bad and it lets you try something new. If you're native, this place is probably too gimmicky for you.

Not bad! It's the only restaurant pre security in MSP so I didn't have much of a choice for food but the atmosphere is nice, service was good and food was definitely better than most airport food I've had. I only had the wild rice soup and salad which was good! The prices are a bit high for certain dishes but I expected it to be for an airport. I'd eat here again.

This was a great find outside security in the airport. Pleasant prompt service, important at an airport. A great mixed greens salad. The beef hot dish was nicely presented. Reasonably priced. Sit at a table or the bar.

I'm not one to complain, but this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a while. A couple of friends and I found ourselves stuck outside of the terminal at the airport, and this was more or less the only option for food. We ordered and then after receiving our drinks we didn't see our server for about twenty minutes. When we were able to get someone's attention, they brought out one meal but not the others (which they had apparently forgotten). When I finally got my veggie burger, about thirty minutes after ordering, it was frozen in the middle. When I told the server what happened, he apologized removed the item from the bill without a second thought-- which is why this is two stars and not one. All in all, the food was way more expensive than it should have been for the quality. And the service was sub-par. I'll make sure not to find myself stuck outside the terminal for a meal again.

Airport restaurants keep getting better, it's true, but most of the offerings out there remain basic pub grub and salads. Even when you find the rare eatery that isn't part of a national chain, you can probably expect some variation on burgers, wings and fries. And Hot Dish has plenty of that on the menu, to be sure (although one of the burgers is a Juicy Lucy, so props to them for that). No, what will make me seek out Hot Dish again in the future is their namesake. Yes, you can get hot dish here. Real hot dish. Ground beef, corn, cream of mushroom soup, topped with tater tots and cheese and baked in the oven. That's just awesome. And a delightful nod to the region. If you want to go a little fancier, they also offer a hot dish with chicken and wild rice (plus the mushroom soup, tots and cheese). The husband chose this, and I thought it was mighty tasty. The decor is pure 60's kitchen, with an emphasis on kitsch. It helped me forget I was in an airport.

I wasn't impressed. We had a longer layover here the other day & have family that live in the area. They met us here so they could see us. Our waiter was horrible. Incredibly scatterbrained. Finally had to go up to the bar to get a water. The menu wasn't very exciting. I ended up with The Wedge Salad because everything else seemed so heavy & greasy. My son got the corn dogs or whatever they called them & he didn't really care for them. He pretty much only ate the apple sauce that came in a cup & my daughter picked at the tater tots. You're not missing much. There are much better options once you go through security.

For a place that seems to take itself pretty "seriously", Hot Dish is a Minnesota gimmick at best. The over priced menu items deliver adequate food, with limited options (vegetarians may have to order a salad without meat, or a veggie burger) because it's safe to assume, if you're there, you really don't have another choice. When we arrived we sat ourselves because there wasn't a sign indicating one way or another. The waiter came over and literally hit me on the back and said in a tone that implied that he was hilarious "Why don't you just seat yourself, then???" He continued in the fashion of semi-condescending humor throughout the meal. I ordered a side of "Seasonal Vegetables" (because someone else was paying, and I wasn't going to order a 10 dollar salad) which was brought out as a single ramekin of carrots (so I guess April is carrot season?). I cut them into tiny little pieces and salted them while everyone else ate their 10$ salads and lettuce wraps (which I should mention are both quite large) and stared at my water. When we finished I took out a bus transfer and the waiter [jokingly] grabbed at it. "Is there time left on that? I get off soon? HAHAH!" I tried to laugh but really I was thinking "please don't touch people, or their things, without asking, it's not funny". I don't have to say this again, because I'm sure it'll affect your choice as little as it affected ours, but this isn't a place to go out of your way for. In fact, you might want to go out of your way to avoid it. If you want to get a feel for Minnesota food or service, this isn't it. In fact I've lived in Minnesota for 20 years and I've never had Hot Dish, so it's easy enough to avoid (much like this restaurant).

Great veggie burger, a very large beer, and the staff was very friendly. Remember, we're talking about an airport restaurant 50 feet from flight check in. All things considered, I couldn't have been happier.

This review is after three visits, today, a few months back and the first day they were open. I feel like this restaurant has potential. Initially they only offered hot dish, news flash, no one wants hot dish! They have expanded to some salads, burgers, a walleye sandwhich and a chicken sandwhich. The salad we ordered was too salty and did not match the ingredients listed on the menu. It was ok but would be much better with another dressing and actually tossed with the dressing, not on the side. The bread served with the salad was strangely sweet and not tasty. The chicken sandwhich was decent. Three stars because they are headed in the right direction.

I went there with a friend and was excited by the menu...the food was sub par...my burger (stuffed burger) was overcooked and the toppings were lacking flavor. Granted there isnt any competition if you are meeting a friend for a layover...but really...burnt burger? And my friend ordered the hot dish and that didnt look up to the minnesota standard.
